The idea condenses into a single gesture: offering water to the city’s wild weeds. Not to create, but to accompany; not to engender, but to adopt. In the fissures of the urban fabric, the fragile thrust of the vegetal is caught and met with an outstretched hand. The hostility of the site becomes the very condition of the intervention, as though the sterility of the ground itself justified the impulse to help. Thus, selection is exercised as much upon the site as upon the plants, summoning both the soil and the being that inhabits it.
The first adversity lies in the essence of public space itself. To the density of human presence, to the indifference of passing feet, is added the deliberate will of a “maintenance militia”, armed with tools and protocols. Their mission: to discipline the free course of life, to uproot every trace of green dissent. The rebels are those that dare to persist, to break through the asphalt and defy the norm — small insurgents rooted in the crack.
The second adversity lies in the meagre cradle of their growth. Loose paving stones, narrow interstices, fissures filled with a poor substratum — a haphazard blend of rubble and dust: all are precarious clearings in miniature, where roots nonetheless force a passage. The urban space becomes a stony desert, where the slightest vein of earth is a fragile oasis. Faced with this deprivation, my gesture turns to supplementation, almost to doping.
Yet the balance remains unstable. The city is not so inhospitable, nor the plants so vulnerable; their very existence, prior to any intervention, bears witness to a vigorous beginning. What, then, does my aid truly mean? What outcome can it have? Is the aim to ensure mere subsistence, or to seek their flourishing? By offering care, do I not risk imposing dependence — and, under the guise of attention, condemn them to irrevocable frailty? Nurtured, they demand ever more; supported, they lose the harsh autonomy that had sustained them. My gesture is, in truth, an infringement upon nature — a tutelage against nature.
In the end, it is not the measurable impact that matters, but the act itself. More than its results, the intervention becomes the true core: a paradoxical action, a fragile alliance of solicitude and sabotage, where protection risks hindrance, and salvation brushes against sacrifice.
