This work engages with the unsettling question of exhibiting a painting on a vaulted wall. Traditionally, the painting docilely conforms to the flat surface of the wall, as though it were its natural extension. Their union rests on an almost ontological compatibility: plane against plane, surface against surface.
But what becomes of this marriage when the wall curves, when it withdraws from flatness?
The dilemma then arises: should the painting bend, incline itself to follow the curvature like a second skin? Or should it remain steadfast in the rigour of its verticality, facing the viewer, at the risk of breaking with the architecture that receives it?
Between submission and autonomy, two regimes are at play. In the first, the work abdicates its frontality, merging with the topography of the site. In the second, it asserts its independence, at the cost of a subtle distortion of volume: a fragile thinness at the top, a pronounced swelling at the base, as though the work were bearing the weight of its own resistance.
Thus, the painting, rather than a stable object, becomes the actor of a fragile negotiation: must it bend with the world, or remain faithful to its own law?
