What here is the painting, what the picture, what the fresco?
A vertical rectangle, set at the centre of the wall — diminutive against the immensity of the surface yet become the focus of the gaze — summons a paradox. Is it a tableau? In silence, it assumes the posture of one. Is it a painting? No, for no pigment rests upon it, yet its presence exists only through a pictorial gesture. The rectangle is nothing more than the portion left bare, spared. It is the surrounding paint that makes it appear. The fresco, by encircling, engenders. The background ceases to be a mere backdrop: it steps into the foreground, it plays its part.
The proportions of the rectangle — one fifth — recall those of Central Park in New York. As a child, I believed this park to be a miraculous remnant, preserved from the assault of skyscrapers, a natural relic trapped within concrete. Later, I learnt it was not remembrance but invention: no memory, but artifice. An urban construct grafted into the heart of the metropolis, a lung fashioned by human hand to simulate the persistence of nature.
