The scene opens with the wall. Painted in pure white, it does not impose itself as a work but lingers as a backdrop — a surface of promise. Yet behind this apparent neutrality lies the true trigger of Painting, Picture & Fresco #4: (Horizontality).
The wall extends onto the floor. Its form, proportions, colour, and texture are mirrored there at full scale. Verticality slips into horizontality, and the floor, in turn, becomes a fresco. But must a fresco exist only in the vertical? Once laid upon the ground, the wall is no mere transposition: it summons a silent depth, a hollow volume born of the union between the two planes.
To paint upon the floor is to transform everything. The work abandons its usual distance to step into the viewer’s domain. What once stood at eye level now lies beneath the feet. Unlike a solid sculpture, this volume offers, in theory, a space one could cross. Yet in practice, the painting stretches across the ground like an invisible circle — a fictive barrier. It does not forbid passage but sketches a fragile frontier, a threshold.
From here, the question shifts: no longer “Can one walk upon it?” but rather “Is one permitted to?” The doubt remains unresolved, but one certainty endures — the whiteness of the surface awaits the first footprint, virgin and vulnerable. That initial step would leave an irrevocable mark and, by mimicry, invite others to follow.
The spectator’s stance — perhaps the fourth dimension of this work — is reduced to a choice both simple and profound: to cross, or to refrain; to risk, or to preserve.
