Adhesive Tapes #1 — Prototype

Take 1
Summer 2004
Polypropylene “Scotch” tape, 35-micron, brown; PVC “Tesa” adhesive tape, 32-micron, brown, on MDF (medium-density fibreboard) panels
Overall dimensions: 50 × 115 × 2.2 cm
Individual dimensions: 2× (50 × 50 × 2.2 cm); 2× (50 × 25 × 2.2 cm); 2× (25 × 50 × 2.2 cm)

Two squares stand side by side — twin forms, almost mirrored, yet never quite the same.
Their resemblance is a matter of discipline; their difference, a matter of breath.
Each panel holds within its geometry a quiet tension, as if balance itself were being measured against precision.

Their surfaces are composed of patient gestures: strips of adhesive tape, joined edge to edge or delicately layered, alternating between matte and gloss, between the world of Scotch and that of Tesa — two empires of adhesion, bound by a shared gravity.

On the left, the vertical divide separates the manufacturers; on the right, it is light that divides — density, not brand, determining the shift from clarity to opacity.

Here, exactness becomes an act of endurance. Each strip meets the next with the rigour of a craftsman’s breath — no overlap, no gap, only the faint rhythm of concentration made visible. And yet, within this precision, minute hesitations appear: soft intervals, almost imperceptible, where the surface ceases to obey and begins to feel.

These deviations are not faults but signs of life — small dissonances within a system that could not, should not, be perfect. In them, the hand asserts itself, gently reminding the eye that geometry, too, can tremble.
Thus the diptych stands: a fragile architecture of order and chance, of measure and warmth — where the most exact line still carries the pulse of its maker.
