This work springs from the desire to release painting from its customary shelter. Where exhibition usually means protection — a closed case that delays decay, a cradle that nurses the picture — here, the painting is cast into the open air. Stripped of its safe niche, it must now watch over its own survival, confronting a world that grants it neither refuge nor mercy.
One might assume that such an exile would demand reinforcement, a bolstering of resilience to prolong its life. Yet the opposite occurs: mingled with washing-up liquid, the pigments become fragile, hypersensitive, at the mercy of the slightest turn in the weather. Rain rinses them away, wind wears them down.
Like the trunk of a tree recording the passage of seasons in its rings, this painting archives the fleeting moods of the sky. Each downpour, each breath of air, each shift in light leaves its trace. The work becomes nomadic, perpetually in exile. It follows the course of the rain, escaping its rectilinear frame, submitting to another law: gravity. Human geometry dissolves, and in its descent remain only vestiges, filaments, until lower down another painting begins to take shape — recomposed by time, chance, and the whim of its support.
The support endures, the guest fades. Yet what has vanished may return: fugacity itself becomes the promise of renewal. Every effacement summons a rebirth, as though the ephemeral secretly bore the seed of eternity.
