According to Le Petit Robert, a tableau is “a pictorial work executed on a rigid and autonomous support.” A fresco, by contrast, is bound to architecture: a vast mural painting, immobile by essence. The tableau travels, the fresco remains. But what happens when one borrows the condition of the other: when the fresco is torn from its wall, and the tableau becomes immovable?
Here, the painting rests on the wall of a container.
Improvised wall, it makes it a fresco.
Framed format, it makes it a tableau.
Between these two definitions, it drifts — uncertain, and free.
The container is a nomad. Its wall, invested with image, carries the painting into exile. At times fresco, at times tableau, it shares the mobility of its support and journeys like an inseparable shadow. The exhibition becomes itinerant: the immovable fresco turns traveller, uprooted from its native ground. Its Heimat is no longer permanence but a perpetual provisional — a dwelling in transit, forever departing, never fully arrived.
Each halt is a suspended breath, a fragile mooring where the painting, silent, recalls its lost fixity. Its whiteness, uncompromising and porous, acts as a receptacle: it gathers dust, stains and imprints, the invisible traces of its crossings. It becomes the memory of its journeys, inscribing within its very alterations the map of its passage.
Condemned to wander, it does not lose its identity: it transforms it. Through its endless motion, it invents a new language — that of migration — where painting becomes a living archive of its own exile.
