The work takes the form of a diptych, a breathing in two movements.
In the first part, a square emerges from the wall like a discreet excrescence. Its skin, hue, and texture mirror those of its host, so that the eye hesitates: is it the wall advancing, or a painting keeping silent? Nothing distinguishes one from the other except the thickness, that slight swelling which marks a frontier. Relief, thin yet insistent, becomes the sole sign of recognition: without it, the (con)fusion would be complete, and the painting’s existence would dissolve into the anonymity of the wall.
The second part answers in the negative. The same square, the same proportions, but without volume. The painting no longer protrudes; it withdraws into the surface. What remains is only a line, a contour, a fragile incision that circumscribes and isolates. This perimeter separates the inside from the outside, the work from its support, presence from absence.
Thus, between protuberance and outline, two versions of the same paradox face one another: a painting that asserts itself by blending in, a painting that reveals itself through the slightest of separations.K.L.
