The diptych Cables, Hooks & Picture Rails: (Decompositions) explores two distinct logics of fragmenting a single form — the square. Each part unfolds according to a geometric process that is at once rational and paradoxical.
In the first part, the original square (120 × 120 cm) undergoes a subtractive process: four bands — two horizontal, two vertical — are removed to generate nine smaller squares. At first glance, the structure appears regular, a perfect subdivision within its own frame. Yet measurement reveals a hidden discrepancy: the nine resulting squares have sides of 36.666 cm — not a whole number. The composition thus maintains its external unity while containing an invisible irregularity at its core. From 120 cm to 120 cm, from the 120 cm square to the 36.66 cm squares, the form recomposes itself without rupture, preserving its outline while concealing its internal dissonance.
The second part follows the opposite path. Here, the same 120 × 120 cm square is divided and its parts set slightly apart, creating nine smaller squares, each precisely 40 cm per side. This time, the measurement is perfectly regular — yet the ensemble expands beyond its origin. The resulting composition now measures 130 × 130 cm: the logic is exact, but the appearance irregular. From 120 cm to 130 cm, from the 120 cm square to the 40 cm squares, precision itself produces displacement.
Across both parts, the work turns on the interplay between rule and deviation, between the geometry of order and the poetics of shift.
Decomposition here is not destruction, but reconfiguration — a dialogue between structure and slippage, between measure and that infinitesimal point where measure dissolves.
